all him the Prince of poker or a million dollar winner Scotty Nguyen is all of the above among famous poker players. He is assuredly one of the most colorful famous poker players on the circuit today. He is known for cryptic quotes and even a bit of controversy.
Personal information
Scotty was born October 28th 1962 in Nha Trang Vietnam. He was born the oldest ofthirteen children and made his way to the United States. At the young age of eleven, Scotty fled his homeland in the midst of the war to end up doing manual labor in Taiwan. When he turned thirteen, he was informed he had an American sponsor and would be going to the United States of America. Soon he was living in southern California, where he finished school. When he got out of school, he went to a place he had dreamed about in Vietnam, Vegas! He began his career washing tables at Harrah’s Casino. It was here that he began dealing poker and ultimately learning the game that would make him one of the best professional poker players.
Tournaments
Scotty’s early career was marked with starts and re-starts; he would deal poker and play in the tournaments then return to dealing when he ran out of money. His inspiration to press on came from another of the famous poker players, Stu Ungar. Stu won the World Series of Poker championship in 1997 and Scotty kept the magazine cover announcing this fact as inspiration. He kept telling himself that one day he would win the champion ship and the highly coveted bracelet that comes with it. He was determined to win the main event even after winning first place and a bracelet Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event in 1997.
One short year later, he would be poised to do just that. In 1998, Scotty paid the ten thousand dollar entry fee for a seat at the World Series of Poker tournament. He battled on for three tough days of play when he found himself at the final table. He made WSOP history the day before by knocking out sixth and seventh place leaving only five players to start the final table. Finally, after hours of play, it was only Scotty and Kevin McBride left playing for one million dollars and the bracelet. It was during the final hand of this heads up match that Scotty uttered his famous quote, "You call this one and its gonna be all over baby", and it was Scotty had pushed all in with a full house on the board, 3 eights and 2 nines. Scotty had the high full house with a nine in his hand. He walked away with his first WSOP tournament win and his picture on the cover of the magazine that had been his inspiration, joining the ranks of professional poker players.
Scotty Nguyen would go on to win many more events and bracelets, many of which he wears to tournaments to this day. All that is except one, his first, in 1998, one of Scotty’s brothers was hit by a car and killed in Vietnam and he vowed to never wear the bracelet again.
Money Won
During his professional poker player career Scotty Nguyen has won four World Series of Poker bracelets, 30 first place wins, and over seven million dollars in cash. In addition, he has won 4 titles on The World Poker Tour and in 2006; he won the title in one hand, something that had never been done before. Scotty Nguyen is definitely a prince among famous poker players and will dominate nearly any table he sits down at.
