How about the 1997 World Series of Poker event, which took place outdoors, at the Fremont Street Experience, right outside of Binions Horseshoe Casino? It was here that Stuey "The Kid" Ungar returned to victory in the WSOP. This phenom had last won the WSOP in 1981...then, gotten himself snowblinded by heavy cocaine use for many long years. So Ungar's triumph was not just over other world class players and all odds; it was also over his own dark side. What a tale!
In fact, you can find WSOP Poker videos here that highlight Ungar's THREE WSOP Main

Event championships. That's a lotta dough.
How about going back to the first decade of the WSOP, and seeing the incredible poker personalities gathered at Binions in 1978?
-Doyle Brunson
-"Amarillo Slim"
-Barbara Freer -- the only lady player there in a time when ladies still really didn't play Texas Hold'em
-Johnny Moss
-Gabe Kaplan
-Ken Smith -- Dressed up like Honest Abe, he would would tip his hat after each hand he won, saying "What a player!"
-"Puggy" Pearson"
The 1978 Binions World Series of Poker was the first WSOP not to have the winner-take-all prize. There was a progressive pot, which the top five players would share...The split was at a 50% for grand prize and then down from there: 20%, 15%, 10%, and 5%.
And how about 1989's dramatic victory of Phil Hellmuth Jr., the "Poker Brat", over perhaps the best overall Hold'em player of that decade, Johnny Chan? Many people expected the legendary Johnny Chan would do in 1989 what no other player had been able to do in the history of the WSOP -- win three consecutive titles.
The WSOP's first ever winner from the 1970 WSOP, the great Doyle Brunson, tried and was unsuccessful. Even Stu Ungar failed. Nevertheless, it seemed like history was within Johnny Chan's grasp in 89. He would come into the tournament confident; indeed, he was cock-of-the-walk. He was the man to beat and it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the grand prize would be his yet again. But the Brat was about to spoil Chan's plans...
